THE BASICS
First of all lets talk about something that we all go through as we struggle to conquer our boards and gravity; FRUSTRATION!
No matter what level skater you are you will experience the Intense anxiety of the "learning curve". Every new trick or subtle aspect of executing a trick has this period of pain and frustration.
It's important to remember that every skater who has nailed a maneuver has gone through this. It is an important part of the process! It shows that you have the desire and determination that
are required to be a skater with "skills". So take a deep breath and take every step of every trick one step at a time. Try not to get STUCK on any particular problem for too long. Try a few new things. Of course you need to put in the time on each new skill EVERY skate session, but you may find that if you develop a routine or a program that includes tricks that you have developed fairly well you will continue to develop your flow.
As you continue to get more comfortable you will find that you tend to loosen up your legs and move more fluidly as time goes on. Don't fight the maneuver (or the curb, or the rail) just go with it for a while.

You'll find that when you go back to the new trick you're working on you'll make breakthroughs a little easier.
Putting together a training course can really help strengthen your body and skills (along with your confidence!). You might put together a 3 or 4 block program with different types of terrain and tricks. Do some acid drops off curbs, manual a sidewalk, Ollie some stairs and throw in some flip tricks. As you repeat this program or this "line" you'll get smoother and smoother.
Although it's important to be aggressive and to skate with riders who are better than you, be sure not to attempt a maneuver that you don't even have the basics of yet! This will only end up causing injury and more frustration. Don't get hurt! It sucks! It'll take forever to heal and you'll be bumming big time. Ever hear the saying " Rome wasn't built in a day"? It's true. It will come in time. Spend the time, think smart, stay focused, and go slow. Conquer every step of a maneuver first then put together the first half or the second half of the trick before putting it all together. You WILL turn heads and solicit howls of appreciation and amazement when you finally pull it off !
It'll be very cool! |
